Music… Makes the People… Come Together

When I shoot a headshot session, nothing makes the social unease of posing and being scrutinized quite as normal as a great soundtrack.

Every person has a distinct ear for their particular brand of music… some people are into Perry Como, others are into Brit-Pop or Southern-Rap. I’m into everything from 40′s Standards, to Bluegrass, to SexyBack (shut up–JT is an all-star, you know you think so too). What I’m getting at is that no matter the person, when familiar music starts to play, the environment you are in suddenly takes on a less threatening tone.

Every photographer has had a session where the subject was less than comfortable, and sometimes a well-timed “Lady Madonna” by the Beatles is just what the doctor ordered for loosening up a smile.

So when you go to your head shot session, take along your iPod (or 8 track player, or whatever), and don’t rely on the photographer having an endless music database to soothe your nerves. Of course, if he/she has an internet connection, you could always tool on over to Pandora and DJ up something you’re sure to like.
